Stripe makes trial offers generally available in Endive

A structured trial price can tighten the handoff from acquisition to recurring billing, provided the team tests the transition and respects integration limits.

A new trial object changes the offer contract

Stripe's September 30 Endive changelog lists trial offers as generally available. Its current subscription documentation describes one object for free or paid introductory pricing, attached to a subscription item for a limited duration, with a specified transition price afterward. That is a meaningful change for revenue operations because the trial is no longer just a date on a subscription. It is an offer with its own price, duration and end behavior, all of which should match the terms approved by sales, marketing, billing and the customer.

The commercial promise must still be checked independently of the API. A discounted first period is not the same as a free period, and a trial on one add-on need not put the whole subscription on trial. A team should record the offer identifier, qualifying segment, trial price, regular price, expected transition date and consent evidence alongside the CRM opportunity and subscription. The release creates a structured billing mechanism; it does not decide who qualifies or whether a customer has agreed to the future recurring charge.

Keep item-level trials separate from account-level lifecycle

Stripe describes discounted, free, upgrade and item-level trial use cases. A subscription can therefore contain a trial offer on one recurring item while other items continue billing normally. If a CRM field simply says trial, downstream sales and customer-success workflows can misread the account. An operator should model which item is under offer, what remains payable now, and what each item's price will become. The customer communication should describe that same state rather than implying that the entire account is free.

For a pilot, create synthetic subscriptions covering a free core item, a discounted add-on, a paid introductory period and an upgrade offer. Reconcile the first invoice, the subscription item state and the first post-trial invoice against the approved order terms. Include a customer who cancels before the transition and one who keeps another full-price item. The exercise is a local acceptance test, not a claim that Stripe has verified a particular team's contract language or lifecycle design.

The integration boundary is narrower than the headline

Stripe says the integration must use API version 2026-09-30.endive or later and flexible billing mode. Its documentation lists Checkout, Payment Links and Elements with Checkout Sessions as unsupported for trial offers; legacy free-trial options remain a different path. Trial offers also cannot be combined with the legacy trial_end parameter. Teams that sell through one of those purchase paths should not assume the new object can be dropped into their current funnel without a design change.

The documented limits matter after purchase too. Trial offers apply to recurring subscription items. Stripe says trial length cannot be changed after subscription creation, and the customer portal can show or cancel an offer but cannot update, pause or resume a subscription with a trial offer. Subscription schedules with trial offers are in public preview and require API handling. RevOps should map support and retention playbooks to those constraints before promising a rescue, extension or self-serve change that the selected flow cannot perform.

Define revenue and conversion measures before launch

Stripe states that items on a trial offer do not contribute to its Billing Analytics MRR while they remain in the trial period, even as other items on the same subscription can contribute. That is a reporting boundary, not a universal definition of booked revenue or pipeline. Finance and RevOps should agree which metrics show signed recurring value, collected introductory cash, active trial population, conversion at the transition, and churn after the regular price begins. Each metric needs a numerator, denominator, clock and owner.

A simple cohort table can separate offer created, first payment due, offer started, offer ended, regular-price invoice issued and invoice paid. Keep cancellations and failed collections distinct from customers who never activated an offer. If a promotional item is attached to an existing subscription, avoid double-counting the account as newly acquired. Any change to offer eligibility or pricing should produce a new version of the experiment definition so a later report can explain why two cohorts are not directly comparable.

Run a controlled offer before widening eligibility

Start with one approved offer and a small authorized cohort. Test the intended price transition, invoice description, notification timing, cancellation path and CRM sync with synthetic records before a real customer is enrolled. Assign an owner to compare the contract, Stripe state and CRM fields after the first invoice and again after the trial ends. If a discrepancy appears, pause new enrollment while the owner determines whether it is an offer configuration, integration mapping, communications or reporting issue.

The practical opportunity is a clearer handoff between product-led acquisition and billing. The risk is treating a technically valid trial object as proof that the commercial workflow is coherent. Stripe's release is evidence of the billing capability and documented limitations. Conversion lift, lower trial abuse and better revenue outcomes are possibilities to test in a company's own cohort, not results established by this announcement.
